When I was a little girl, I remember being absolutely mesmerized by a Mighty Mouse cartoon that, in addition to Mighty M saving the day, also included a scene of some belly dancing little female mice—complete with head dresses and billowing chiffon pants—all moving to Middle Eastern music. The image made in indelible imprint. Though the household of my childhood didn’t encourage flowing scarves or swiveling hips, my little girl soul knew female power when she saw it—even if only in a watered down cartoon version.
I believe that one of the main reasons I became an ob/gyn physician is that I, albeit unconsciously, wanted to get right to the heart of Divine female power. And that power lives in the belly and the pelvis—those areas which our culture, up until very recently, has steered all little girls away from—but which belly dancing teaches us to honor and develop deliberately.
